So I've been extremely busy with jobs the last 5 months, back-to-back freelance without a break this whole time. Still have 5 jobs on the burner as of right now, but I always make sure to make a little time for bandwork. Large jobs, like fully painted album covers and such tend to get shuffled in line with the other jobs, to be tackled once all jobs that came before it are finished. But things like flyers and merch that's needed for a particular show, in a hurry, have to get done along the way, regardless of what I'm working on at the time. As long as I can scrape enough hours together.
Who needs sleep right?

Anyway, here's a handful of band items I did recently.

Creature Feature & NEXTtoFOREVER

For all those who didn't come out to the Creature Feature Show, you missed a great event. There was a lot of artwork available to view, from myself, Autumn Carufel, and John Middleton. To set the scene: you walk up the stairs and enter the studio to immediately be confronted with artwork ahead of you. The awesome black, white, and red ticket booth from the Zombie Ball remains there on your right. On the left is a stunning display of paintings from John Middleton, as well as paintings and photography from Autumn Carufel. Straight ahead is the beginning of a long line of paintings and prints from myself. An old retro television sits amongst the artwork. Following the art along the wall you come to a wooden record player playing the Misfits. If you were to turn completely 180 around on the opposite wall is a "shopping area". The book Adoration for the Dead was available to purchase, as well as DVDs of The Corpse Vanishes, The Brain That Wouldn't Die, and Night of the Living Dead, all with packaging design by me. The menus of those DVDs also include slideshows of some of my horror artwork. Continuing down the shopping center is a selection of horror movie magnets, as well as prints of my artwork. A large concession area was next to this where you could purchase coffee, soda, or popcorn. Free cookies were available as well. We originally had a large classic popcorn maker for the event, but in an unfortunate accident it was broken. Special thanks to John Middleton for swift action on getting us another. Now turning to your left, you could walk straight forward towards the dark half of the studio. As the light fades to dark in front of you, you arrive at a seating area, complete with a big comfortable sofa, several big cushy chairs, an ottoman or two, and small tables to set your drinks and things. A projector, two laptops, speakers, and a mess of cords sat on a table in the middle, projecting old black and white horror films onto the wall, including The Corpse Vanishes and The Brain That Wouldn't Die. The turnout was less than expected, and many who had claimed on the facebook event page that they were coming did not come at all. But there was a steady flow of people coming in and out, and I was surprised to see some people who I'd had no idea were coming. It's amazing the support I receive from my friends and family, and often from complete strangers. Overall the event was a great success, because all who came had a great time. Special thanks to John Middleton who's connections provided us with the projector to make viewing the movies possible.

I realized afterward that I took almost no photos at all. Only one or two during setup and one or two during the actual event. I have no photos of the movie area, or of John and Autumn's section. If anyone has any pictures, please send them my way. Here are a couple photos:

As for NEXTtoFOREVER Studios, some sad news has now been posted online. Here is a quote from their facebook page:

"We want to thank Josh Werner of As Fall Leaves Illustration for the display of his amazing art work at the Creature Feature Show last night.
We would also, sadly, like to announce that NtFS will be no more as of January, due to all of it's members talking on their own personal projects. Everyone is excited for their new adventures and would like to thank everyone who made the studio what it was while it lasted!"

The closing of NEXTtoFOREVER Studios is a sad moment for Port Huron. Here is an incredible studio and gallery space in the historic Fead building, with such a long history in the art community that will now go unused. But please remember the dedicated few who kept the underground art community alive in the Port Huron area. Let's wish each of them the best of luck in all their artistic endeavors. People with this sort of passion and talent will continue to grace the world with their ideas and art, we must all be sure to keep a close eye on them, I'd certainly hate to miss out on witnessing art history take place. Because it's up to us to create today's history of tomorrow. As for the community in Port Huron and Southeastern Michigan in general, let's remember to keep things moving. When great places like NEXTtoFOREVER close, it's important that more places rise to take their place. A great thank you to John Middleton and Autumn Carufel for allowing me to share in this final moment of their studio, I'm proud and honored to be a part of something so great.

As for the Creature Feature Show, I hope to carry it on further. Their are people out there who share my passion for both retro horror films and artwork, and I fully intend to continue bringing the two together and providing opportunities for people to come and enjoy them. I have a lot more art to create, and there are a lot more films to watch. I'll let everyone know when it's time "The Creature Feature Show 2." ;)

A time when you awaited midnight excited to turn the knobs and bend the antenna to bring creatures and horrific characters into your living room. This is a gallery show like no other! Please visit this webpage for all details on this art class being offered at a great rate at NEXTtoFOREVER Studios in Port Huron. Classes are every Saturday from 10am to 1pm starting January 14th for 5 weeks. Then, the following Saturday evening will hold a gallery show where the student will be able to show (and if they'd like, sell) their artwork they created in the class!
This class is only $60!
All you have to do to register and hold your spot in the class is email Joshua Werner at asfallleaves@hotmail.com and say you'd like to take the Mixed Media class! Here's all the info you need to know about class materials:
The following are the materials that will be necessary for the class. No name brand materials necessary. Creativity and the following tools will be all you’ll need to create incredible quality pieces of artwork in this class! Try to have all of these ready by your first class if possible.

- A bottle of craft glue, be sure it’s a glue capable of gluing both paper and fabric (and not Super Glue). Sobo is a great brand for this, but any brand of craft glue will do.

- 2 11x14 Stretched Canvases (Please be sure these are stretched and boarded canvases, we’d like all of the canvases to be uniform size and shape for the gallery show!)

- 1 16x20 Stretched Canvas

- White acrylic gesso, any brand will do.

- At least one large area brush for applying the gesso to the canvas.

- Craft brushes: cheap “do-all” brushes that we can use to apply glue and any variety of wet mediums.

- Acrylic painting brushes. These are brushes that you just intend to use for acrylic paints.

- At least one black fine point and one black “ultra” fine point marker. Sharpies are great, but any brand will do.

- Acrylic paints: try to bring a variety of colors if you can. Any brand will do, but don’t bring “washable” paint (paints that can be washed off fabrics and upholstery, these are less likely to hold up in mixed media pieces).

- Some sort of plastic paint palette, doesn’t have to be anything fancy!

- A Pair of Scissors

Some other recommended materials: Pencils, erasers, a sketch book, and just about any other art supplies you might want to bring. This is all about exploring other mediums in conjunction with paint. So: Have markers? Bring them! Have colored pencils? Bring them! The instructor will also have some supplies available for use in the classroom, just be sure to have everything on the materials list!

SNAFU Album Cover Progress Shots

A lot of people really liked the album cover I did for SNAFU's "Sick as Shit". I know it's old news now and most of you have already seen it, but when clearing out some pics on my cell phone I came across a couple progress shots and I thought I'd share them with you.
After the next few jobs I'm doing now (if I survive them) I'll be starting on new cover art for SNAFU's next album, it's going to be pretty rad.

After doing some sketches to try to achieve that balance between
stylization and a recognizable likeness, I solidify the drawing in ink.

Then I start laying dark areas to start giving some appearance
depth between the logos and the band, as well as lay in the background
color. The paint you're seeing is not watercolor, it's gouache.

After working in the background I felt it best to lock down the logos and puke
and do the figures last. With gouache a lot of colors don't overlap each other
well, so there's little room for my messy style, it's better to use detail brushes
and be precise. A little definition with some fine point makers helps as well.

After some discussions with the band on their apparel and colors,
it's safe to start filling them in. Small tweaks to highlights and shadows
continue in the logos as well.

After wrapping up the the band memebers, some overall tweaks to the light areas,
dark areas, and levels of contrast help push the composition in the direction
i wanted. A good balance between a fun painting and an iconic album cover.

Recently in Hong Kong I also saw an interesting exhibit called Street Life One on One at The One in Tsim Sha Tsui. The exhibit featured an interesting variety of art, DJ equipment, and objects from Hip Hop's history and time period. Sorry for all the glares off the glass!

Comic conventions and tattoos

Hi everyone! I'm trying to get ready for a comic book convention in September where I'll have a table selling stuff. I'll have my usual horror paintings and prints, but I'm going to whip up a few small comic book characters as well. They'll be small ink drawings and gouache paintings that'll range in price from $20 to $50. I'm most likely only going to do a handful of characters and they'll probably all be Marvel ones. Here's a drawing of Nightcrawler that's in progress, this one will get painted soon (sorry for the crappy cell phone pic).

I'm also going to be selling some small plaster hand-made and hand-painted comic book character magnets. Here's a Deadpool I'm working on for practice.

But I'm taking a break from working on this stuff to work on a commissioned tattoo sleeve. It's going to be a completely surreal image, and a bit creepy, with lots of different elements. I've been doing preparatory sketches the last few days, nailing down details and figuring out the composition. It should be pretty cool. I'll post progress pics and of the drawings later, and then the finished drawing, and eventually the finished tattoo.
While I work on the tattoo stuff, I want some feedback from you guys as to what characters you think I should draw/paint for the comic con. I was considering doing what's popular, but then I thought, "maybe I'll just do the stuff I like because people will be able to get the popular characters at other stands". Then I thought I'd ask for some opinions. The first person I thought of is my good buddy Steve, and secondly I thought of the world wide web. So, please, tell me, what characters would you like to see me sell at the comic con?

I've also started getting prepped for the Detroit Fanfare comic book convention, where I'll be a guest. More info on that coming soon. Deadpool custom figure

As a gift for a friend I decided to do my first custom action figure. This Deadpool figure is 3 3/4" tall (smaller scale figure) and was made from a Spiderman 2099 figure and a Snake Eyes GI Joe figure.
These photos were taken shortly before I finished the figure. After these photos I went back and touched up all of the paint. And sadly, I didn't take any pictures of the finished project before I gave it to my friend (woops!) so you'll just have to look at these and imagine it a little bit nicer. I kind of went for a more Rob Liefeld looking DP, I wanted to deck him out with an arsenal. So he has his swords, two knives, a machine gun, and a pistol. And lots of little pouches to carry stuff. What's a Deadpool without pouches?

I was hired by a Latin food restaurant called El Guanaco to create a graphic for them to use on whatever they needed (signs, menus, etc). They were specific with what they had in mind, which was helpful. The piece is a mix of acrylic, ink, and digital. Here's some progress shots and the finished graphic.

Morrow Road Production Office Open House party

Morrow Road's Open House is a success! About 100 people attended (private invite only) the new office located at 14203 Rick Dr, in Shelby Twp. The office boasts nearly all of the film's
storyboard art, oil painting props, posters and compositions. The office utilizes a tracking, red & UV lighting theme you'd have to see for yourself as words cannot justify the experience.
Equipped with a presentation projector, killer audio system, lounge couches and conference table and chairs, all future business meetings and select celebrations will be held here. Special thanks
to Co-Producer Mark McFarland for enabling the film to set camp here.

Revealed at the Open House was Josh Werner's latest composition--which was blown up to 27" x 40" featuring Isabella the Ghost in the Woods. Extremely creepy and dark, many found it to be Josh's
best work yet. It will also be used for the cover of the new Business Plan.

Tobi Couture & Josh Werner collaborated and created a 6' by 10' mural of Morrow Road. Located at the top of the stairway leading to the office, Tobi also painted trees along the stairwell, so as you
proceed upstairs you feel like you are traveling down Morrow Road.

Available at the event was a new DVD handout containing all the film's visuals. Designed by Josh Werner, it also contained cast, crew & project info on its container sleeve, plus his latest composition.

In attendance was cast members Adam DeLucia, Robert Maples, Marlee Goldman and Brittney Moscatello. Crew members included Producer/Director Francis J. Sampier, Executive Producers Alex Greene &
Bruce Wood, Co-Producers Mark McFarland and Jeff Arwady, Storyboard Artist Josh Werner, Insurance Agent Edie Derusha, CGI Artist Hope Sampier, Creative John Gerds, PA Ryan Lauer, Assistant
Costumes Jennifer Moroschan,Story Contributor Lucas Pelz, Music Editor Dr. William Withem and Associate Producer/Graphic Designer Robbin Webb. Past fundraiser volunteers who volunteered
for this event included Brianna Sampier, Christie Dalecke, Jennifer Moroschan, Rob Showman, Hope Sampier, Jessica Arwady, Ryan Lauer & Jesse DeRue.

Also revealed at the meeting were two surprises: First, that the orchestra Morrow Road mentioned securing a couple months ago turned out to be the world's best film scoring orchestra--
the London Symphony Orchestra! This will be conducted and orchestrated by our composer Jeff Arwady. Second, Morrow Road has already secured initial venture capital! This means for the first time
the film has raised real capital. It has done so by means of completing a brand new business plan by Bruce Wood, Alex Greene, Mark McFarland, Jeff Arwady and Francis J. Sampier.

This new Business Plan has created Inverted House Productions, LLC which will act as venture capital--the capital needed to execute the remainder of the business plan. Once this is all secured, the
capital is used to secure the units required for Morrow Road Productions, LLC--the capital it takes to set-up, shoot, edit and sell the film. Many plans are in the works to achieve this and the venture
capital has already began. The film's new business plan calls for a summer 2012 shoot! We are all very excited!

I had a really interesting vision in one of my dreams last night that I can’t seem to get out of my head. I’d really like to paint it, for myself. I haven’t gotten to do a personal painting in quite a while. But there’s really no time for that right now, I still have a few clients waiting on work from me. If I get a second I might do a quick sketch of it though, and maybe I’ll post it here or on the facebook to see what you guys think, and to see if if you think it’s worthy of a full color painting. If so, maybe when there’s time in the future I’ll paint it and make prints to post for sale. :)

So I've been dying to do some painting just for myself. You artists remember what that is? To just paint whatever you want however you want on whatever you want, and how stress relieving it can be? If you're a graphic designer or illustrator, chances are you probably forgot what that feels like, haha.
Anyway I started doing something just for me, (which I'll post pics of later when I get back to it), but then reality tugged and reminded me that I still have a lot to get done for other people.
So I'm reworking some designs for G5, sketching out my composition for The Flying Mudbrothers in preparation for that painting, I'm making a custom action figure as a gift for a friend, kicking out a bunch of art for Pelle Pelle, then it's back to the drawing board for some band t-shirt concepts. It seems like even the things you love the most cause you stress when doing it is your job.
Anyway, when that's all done I have about a dozen people patiently waiting on me for tattoo designs.
When that's done, I'd like to start practicing with my own tattoo equipment so I can start inking up some skin.
Blah blah blah, I'm not really going anywhere, just... you know... blogging.
I'll be posting some pics of some of this stuff soon.

Dead and Famous: Elvis

So I thought it would be fun to take some old movie/music stars and zombify them. So I'm going to start a small t-shirt line called Dead and Famous with zombie versions of these old stars, my first shirt being of Elvis.

Some ideas for future shirts: Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, maybe Jim Morrison. Any other ideas on people I should do?

So currently I'm working on a band flyer/poster (hopefully I finish it today). But I thought I'd take a second to show you some progress shots of the gouache painting (which I had to hurry and finish up yesterday morning).

Started with some rough pencil sketches on illustration board, then started hard lining them in to establish some stability, then thew some gouache down to establish some foreground depth, then middle ground, then background.

Touched it off with a little ink and colored pencil. Wish I'd had a bit more time, I could've added a bit more detail.

The Suicide Machines benefit concert

So I'm working on a few different things right now... The gouache piece I mentioned earlier, a big poster for a show (which is becoming a bit more involved than I expected, might even need a model for the photo reference I need to speed up my work), and I'm about to start painting on a guitar (a first for me!). But then this last second flyer popped up for a Suicide Machines show. It's a benefit for the children of deceased Bill Jennings (ex-drummer for the Suicide Machines). It's taking place a week from Monday, so I had to kick it out all at once, tonight! Whipped it up, I hope it doesn't show too bad that I did it in so little time.

Gouache!!

I've started a new piece that I'm pretty excited about. Unfortunately I need to get it done in a very short amount of time, which is unfortunate because if I had the time to really spend on it it could be soooo much better.

Anyway, I'll try to do it fast and still have it be cool (it seems like this is the case for every single thing I've been working on lately).

I've decided to do it in gouache, ink, and a little colored pencil.

I haven't used gouache in a really long time, wish me luck!

The band is looking for a main logo, and they weren't feeling the last one (scratchy punk looking one). Here's an option I worked up that takes it in more of an old school thrash look, along the lines of Destruction, Anthrax, Death Angel, Testament, Overkill, etc. Hope they like it! If not, it'll be a good reference point to point me in the right direction.

Arrival in Hong Kong

I arrived at my room at the Royal Garden in Kowloon about 8pm (8am in the U.S.). We were able to nab a direct flight from Detroit to Hong Kong without a layer over in Tokyo, which shortened the trip a lot. It had already been dark in Hong Kong for over an hour. A thick layer of smog covers all of Hong Kong, much of it coming from the factories in Southern China. The humidity is incredibly high. As soon you walk outside your clothes stick to you. A brief walk around Kowloon will make your shirt soaked with sweat.The hotel is beautiful; my room is spacious and well equipped. The employees of the hotel speak pretty good English, but along with their own accent they also speak English with a British accent, sometimes making it a bit hard to understand. Unlike China, the people in Hong Kong drive on the left side of the road. We had taken a taxi from the Kowloon train station to the Royal Garden and the driving reminded me of New York City, chaotic and kind of frightening. We walked along the Kowloon Peninsula, through the Hong Kong version of the walk of fame. Some notable things I spotted were Jackie Chan’s hand prints in the boardwalk and a statue of Bruce Lee. We took the Star Ferry over to Hong Kong Island. When you figure out the exchange rate the ferry only cost about 30 cents U.S. Hong Kong makes New York City look like Detroit. It’s a massive metropolis that is buzzing with activity. Even on a weeknight the streets are packed with people. The World Cup is taking place, and all of the bars in Hong Kong are packed with people watching soccer. There are people from all over the world, and bars from all over the world. We went into a Russian ice bar. They hand you fur coats to wear when you enter, and the walls are pure ice. Even the seats are blocks of ice. This is apparently the only good way to do shots of vodka. I didn’t take a coat and the extreme change in temperature made my skin steam into a cloud around my body. The city is very well kept. There’s little garbage and graffiti and little-to-no danger (at least in the areas I walked). Everything was beautiful, including the people. All of the people were beautiful, and wearing expensive designer clothes and were very accustom to a city life style. I never saw a single person overweight. There also aren't any homeless people, suprisingly. There are tons of places to shop, especially expensive designer stores like Armani and Louis Vuitton. I tried Tsingtao, a Chinese lager. It was pretty good. There are a lot of 7-11s in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island but the products are much different than the ones back home. I bought some snacks to take back to my room. Nothing too risky but definitely some interesting packaging. The prices are very high, it’s unusual seeing what appear to be American prices, but obviously they are HK $. For example, a sign in front of a Subway advertises that 6” subs are only $26 each. The people here love soccer. There’s World Cup ads and merchandise everywhere you look. It’s sad that you don’t see any of that in the U.S. There’s a popular advertisement here for a brand of water that makes fun of the U.S. I saw the billboards for it but confirmed what the joke was when I saw the commercial on tv in my room. It’s an anime style cartoon showing a bunch of (American) football players crashing through soccer players at the world cup, knocking them over and tackling them. Then it says “Wrong sport! Right water!”. Anyway, that’s all for tonight. I have to get up in a few hours.

Death Merchant - the beginning!

So I've been hired to do the album cover for a metal band called "Death Merchant". This includes doing a logo as well. So I worked up a quick (very rough) concept sketch of two corpses sharing one set of intestines. I'm trying to work pain, agony, and despair in equal parts into this piece. Also, I've worked up my first finalized version of the logo (notice the little jaw bone coming off the "D", my favorite part). Tomorrow morning I'm going to get some supplies for the painting, then the bass player is coming over to check out the logo and the sketch. If he likes the concept and gives the go ahead then I'll start the painting right away! Give me your thoughts and opinions!

Harley commission finished!

It's official, I've finished the massive commission piece. For those who didn't read the earlier post, this painting is of a collage of photos that were given to me showing places he visited on his motorcycle. His arms gesture outward to show that the world is all his. You may recognize some famous landmarks. This piece provided many challenges, a big one being the composition. How do I create a composition from so many different places being included? I wanted the variety of backgrounds to have some sort of flow. After much trial and error I think I came to a decent conclusion.

There's a lot of fun little ideas I put into this painting as well. As you'll see there's a picture of him on the beach, his feet just on the edge of the water. This is to represent that he put his feet in all of the great lakes. I used real sand on the beach to give a sense of realism and texture, as well as a bit of gloss to make it look wet. The mountain range representing the badlands is a super thick texture paint made for interior wall decorations. I build it up and sculpted it to make it appear rocky. This turned out to be a bigger challenge to paint on top of then I expected, but through several layers of wet and dry brushing it turned out decent.

I hope he likes it! Tomorrow I go hunting for a frame for it. Wish me luck that I find something that complements it well and isn't too expensive!

In progress: new commission piece

Hey everyone,

I'm working on a new commission piece, a pretty large one. Basically, what the customer wants is a painting of them and their motorcycle, and for the background to be a collage of all the places they've visited on the bike. After many tries at different compositions and thumbnails, I came to a conclusion. the piece is going to look "collage-like" no matter what I do. So, with that in mind, I just started laying the shapes of the places in like puzzle pieces, not worrying about what makes sense but just what looks cool. Here's a couple progress shots I've been taking along the way. I'll post the final when I'm finished.

Miami, FL (Monday, February – This past weekend, Requiem Clothing, Hip Hop Weekly magazine and acclaimed artist/producer Benzino brought together a group of some of the most talented young Haitian hip hop artists to record and perform the song/music video “Mamman Pa Crie (Mama Don’t Cry) – A Requiem To Haiti,” to be released this week by Oasis Music Group.

Featuring the vocals and performances of Haitian artists Black Da-Da (Strictly Business/Universal Republic Records), Redd Eyez (Zoe Pound/Asylum Records), Billy Blue (Poe Boy/Interscope Records) and Melky Jean, sister to Wyclef, the music video for this powerful Haiti tribute and awareness song was produced over the course of 3 days during the Super Bowl Weekend in Miami. The video was directed by R. Malcom Jones, and was shot on location throughout the Little Haiti section of Miami, as well as at the Oasis Audio and Video Production studios in Aventura.

The video/song project was given a major boost by Wyclef Jean, who appears in the video while his sister Melky performs her verse. During the video production, Wyclef commented, “This is big song. It’s an international, worldly song and I was happy to be a part of the video.” Look for the release of the song and video later this week.

Bates Motel

Hey everyone!

So I have a Bates Motel themed bathroom... you know, from the movie Psycho. I have a sign above the toilet made out by Norman Bates welcoming you to the motel, a bloody shower curtain with the silhouette of the killer with the knife, little shampoos and soaps and a hand towel that says Bates Motel on it... etc. Anyway, I had this empty spot on the wall in there and I really wanted to put a Psycho poster up. Well, not really one that said Psycho on it, I really just wanted a "Bates Motel" poster to really tie up my theme. I couldn't really find anything I liked, so I made my own. Afterward, I put up some Bates Motel products with the artwork I did for the poster on my zazzle site (www.zazzle.com/asfallleaves) and it got some serious attention. Gotta love those classic horror films. I have a couple commissions to do and then I'll be working on a painting of the Vincent Price 50's classic "The Fly". After that... It's a tie between a painting of Jason Voorhees, The Abominable Dr. Phibes (kissing scene), or a Planet of the Apes painting. What do you think?

I'm hoping to get some prints together and do some horror conventions this summer. I'll update you on those as dates are confirmed.
